School Registration Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Students can only be enrolled in a St. Johns County School if the student’s parent/guardian’s primary residence is in St. Johns County.

The exception to this policy is through the Controlled Open Enrollment process, for qualifying schools.  Learn more about Controlled Open Enrollment.

Students are zoned to attend a specific school based on their primary residence address.  If a family owns more than one home in St. Johns County, the primary address used for school zoning will be the property with the Homestead Exemption.  The zoned schools for each address can be found using the Attendance Zone Locator.

If you are purchasing a home or moving into a rental property in the future, you will not be able to register your child at the school zoned for that address until you have a signed closing statement or current lease.  If you are staying in a temporary residence until you are able to move into your new home, you may apply for an Out-of-Zone Hardship Waiver, as long as the temporary residence is located in St. Johns County.  The Hardship Waiver Application and additional information about hardship criteria are available on our Student Transfers web page.

St. Johns County School District does not accept Power of Attorney or notarized guardianship paperwork as proof of guardianship.  Per School Board Rule 5.05(1)(e), when a student resides with a person who is not the student’s parent seeks to enroll in school, the student shall present a court order appointing the person with whom they reside as either their legal guardian or legal custodian or shall present other proper documentation from a state or federal agency placing the child with the person with whom they reside.  In the absence of a court order or proper documentation from a state or federal agency placing the child with the person whom they reside, the following documents may be accepted for school registration purposes:

  • A written, notarized consent from the parent or legal guardian
    AND
  • Documentation from the Clerk of Courts showing that a Concurrent Custody or Temporary Guardianship petition has been filed

You can get the required FL 680 form from your child’s pediatrician or the St Johns County Health Dept.  If you are moving from another state and do not have a pediatrician in this area, you can go to the Health Dept or an urgent care center (Care Spot, CVS Minute Clinic, etc.) to get the shot record transferred to the FL 680 form.   You may also request the form from the Health Dept through email.  Learn more information about the immunization process in St. Johns County, FL.

You may submit a physical from another state as long as the physical was completed and signed by a physician within the past 12 months.  Please note that the physical must be a school entry physical or an annual well child examination.  We do not accept sports physicals for school enrollment.

You may submit a start up notice from one or more of your utility companies (electric, water, internet, etc.).  The proof of residency document must have your name and the address listed.

If you are unable to upload the documentation in the PowerSchool registration form, you can drop the documents off at the child’s school.

Students are not allowed to start school until the physical and FL 680 Immunization Record have both been submitted.

Once the registration form has been completed and submitted, the school will receive the information and will reach out to you with more information.  It may take a few days for the school to complete the enrollment and provide a start date for your child.

If you are experiencing homelessness, you can find more information about enrolling in school.
