Lou Greco Receives NEFLIN Distinguished Career Award for 2022

The Northeast Florida Library Information Network (NEFLIN) recently awarded the Distinguished Career Award for 2022 to former Director of Media Services Lou Greco. This award is for an individual who has displayed exemplary achievement and leadership throughout his/her career in the library field.

Video Transcript by Kate Tompkins, Pedro Menendez High School

Anyone who has met Lou, even for a few minutes, can see the amazing effect and impact he has on people. Lou has more energy in his pinky finger than I do in my whole body! Lou was the Director of Media Services from 1995 to 2013, and he was an amazing leader.

Lou’s passion for libraries and education is palpable. Lou’s caring nature makes everyone he talks to feel important and heard. After a brief retirement (because you know he can’t sit still!), Lou came back to our district as a school librarian and opened a K-8 school. Yes, he came back and opened a brand-new school! After that, Lou took over the school librarian position at Gamble Rogers, the feeder school to my school.

In this role I’ve gotten to see him in his element- with the kids. Every student who comes here from Gamble raves about Mr. Greco and says how much they love him. And this isn’t just our big readers—this is every student, including our struggling readers, who may even love him more than the avid readers because of his passion and how much he supports our students who are averse to or struggle with reading.

When Lou comes over to my school, you’d think a celebrity was here by the way the kids react! Lou loves young people and chats with them about their lives, and that’s what really sticks with them, long after they’ve left his school. Lou reads nearly all the books in his collection so he can recommend books to students, and he thinks of innovating programming to motivate his students to read more. He’s incorporated Genre Bingo as a way to keep students reading and have them try books out of their normal genre. He saw that his students liked the “Who Was” series of books, so he made a similar challenge with those.

He is also accepting of where his students are with their reading, and he buys them books they’re interested in reading, including “lower level” books that other middle school librarians might eschew because he just simply wants his students to read and enjoy their experience reading.

On a bigger level, Lou is an advocate for school libraries. When the school libraries in Putnam were in jeopardy, he went to the school board meeting to speak against getting rid of their school librarians. Lou has served on numerous FAME and AASL committees over the years, as well, including serving as FAME president.

Even though Lou is no longer our leader, he gives all of us advice and is always a good sounding-board for our ideas or problems. I’ve already begged him to come back after retirement to come visit our students! Lou has impacted so many librarians, educators, and students over his decades of service in St. Johns County that I can’t even imagine we could calculate the effect, but I know his legacy will live on forever in our county and beyond.

Opening Day 2022

The student count for the St. Johns County School District (SJCSD) the first day of school, August 10, was 43,409, an increase of 1,665 students or 4% over last year’s first day number of 41,744. St. Johns County continues to be one of the fastest growing school districts in the state.

The high school student count was 13,601 with 2,260 students at Bartram Trail High School, 2,383 at Creekside High School, 1,371 at Pedro Menendez High School, 2,119 at Allen D. Nease High School, 1,863 at Ponte Vedra High School, 1,615 at St. Augustine High School and 1809 at Tocoi Creek High School. There were also 181 students in attendance at St. Johns Technical High School.

Middle school attendance totaled 7,136, with student headcounts ranging from 634 at Sebastian Middle School to 1,382 at Pacetti Bay Middle School. The other first day totals were Alice B. Landrum Middle School with 1,090, Fruit Cove Middle School with 1,182, R. J. Murray Middle School with 641, Gamble Rogers Middle School with 835, and Switzerland Point Middle School with 1,372.

The district’s K-8 schools totaled 10,262. Liberty Pines Academy had a first day headcount of 1,581, Patriot Oaks Academy with 1,298, Valley Ridge Academy with 1,188; Freedom Crossing Academy with 1,775, Palm Valley Academy with 1,363, Mill Creek Academy with 1,691 and Pine Island Academy with 1,366.

The elementary school population totaled 12,042. This count only includes approximately 34% of all kindergarten students since schools stagger the kindergarten start date over a three-day period. Another 368 students attended the district’s alternative, charter and Department of Juvenile Justice schools.

“The preparation from administration, teachers and support staff to welcome students on the first day was amazing,” said Superintendent Tim Forson. “As I visited schools it was wonderful to see the excitement of students as they greeted school staff, engaged with friends and started getting acquainted with their teachers.”

“Transportation, food service, custodial and maintenance staff are making an exemplary effort in handling their responsibilities and supporting our students. The St. Johns Sheriff’s Office, St. Augustine Police Department, Public Service Assistants and Crossing Guards are supporting our operations and adding another layer of safety and security to our campuses. Lastly, I am grateful to our parents for their support as we manage the beginning of the school year.”

SJCSD staff will continue to monitor attendance numbers, balance classrooms and refine bus routes in the coming weeks.

Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer Program for School Year 2021-2022

Florida has been approved to implement a Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer (P-EBT) program for the 2021-2022 School Year. The P-EBT program is a supplemental benefit for households with students who temporarily lost access to free or reduced-price school meals due to COVID-related absences. Parents and guardians of students who meet the eligibility criteria should apply for P-EBT benefits for the 2021-2022 School Year. The application for P-EBT benefits can be accessed through the Florida Department of Children and Families website.

Once the application has been completed, parents and guardians will need to print or email the application and the school must confirm the student’s COVID-related absences. Once the application has been certified through the student’s school, the parent or guardian of the student must submit the certified application through the P-EBT application portal, which can be accessed on the Florida Department of Children and Families website. Once received, the Florida Department of Children and Families will review the information and issue the appropriate P-EBT benefits to the parents or guardians.

If you have any questions, please contact the P-EBT Call Center 1-833-311-0321.
