When a student is experiencing behavioral difficulty (related to motivation) that limits the student’s ability to participate in the educational process, the school may benefit from consultation with a district behavior specialist. The district behavior specialist promotes Applied Behavior Analysis standards and they coach staff in the behavior change process (observation, data collection/summary, functional behavioral assessment, writing behavior intervention plans, assessing progress and demonstrating evidence-based strategies). They typically assist students with disabilities or those who are suspected of having a disability through the Multi-Tiered System of Support problem-solving process.
