40-Hour Reading Opportunities

DO I NEED the 40 Hours of Reading Points for Certification Renewal?

Starting with renewals in 2025, as per Section 1012.585(3)(f) F.S., ANYONE with the following areas on their Florida Teaching Certificate MUST acquire 40 hours of professional learning credits “specifically designed for studens with caracteristics of dyslexia, including the use of explicit, systematic, and sequential approaches to reading instruction, developing phonological and phonemic awareness, decoding, and implementing multisensory intervention strategies:”

                                • Elementary Education (K-6)
                                • Prekindergarten/Primary Education (age 3 through grade 3)
                                • Elementary Education (grades 1-6), Primary Education (grades K-3)
                                • English (grades 1-6), Middle Grades English (grades 5-9)
                                • Middle Grades Integrated Curriculum (grades 5-9)
                                • English (6-12)
                                • Reading (K-12)
                                • Reading (Endorsement)
                                • English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) (grades K-12)- this is certification ONLY- Endorsement does not fall nito this category

HOW CAN I EARN the 40 Hours of Reading Points for Certification Renewal? (You need 40 Reading Points EVERY five years)

*Please Note* You may only earn credit ONCE for a course!

**THESE POINTS DO NOT BANK!  You MUST earn them within the proper validity period!**

The following are currently the only methods to fulfill this requirement:

 

  • Exploring Structured Literacy (40 hours)   (FDLRS) To Receive Credit:  Individuals in SJCSD will receive a personal invitation when they are within the validity period in which they must earn this credit.  This course may only be offered between August 10 – April 30 each school year as per FDLRS/FLDOE.
  • Literacy  Micro-Credential-ELEMENTARY (60 hours)  (UF Flamingo) To Receive Credit:  Submit transcript/certificate of completion to PD Department upon completion.  This course is offered through UF Flamingo.
  • Literacy  Micro-Credential-SECONDARY (60 hours)  (UF Flamingo) To Receive Credit:  Submit transcript/certificate of completion to PD Department upon completion.  This course is offered through UF Flamingo.
  • Reading Endorsement Coursework (60 hours each course)  (Only if completed during the validity period requiring the 40-hours to renew) Courses offered through SJCSD- see information under Endorsement Courses

4.  Choose a Course and Select NEFEC for the Center

5.  Click: Search (If nothing appears, then there are no scheduled courses available at this time.)

7.  Complete the course according to the guidelines provided by your course facilitator

8.  Complete the Course Survey

9.  Receive the Certificate of Completion from your course facilitator

10.  Submit the Certificate of Completion to the Professional Learning Department
