40-Hour Reading Opportunities

DO I NEED the 40 Hours of Reading Points for Certification Renewal?

Starting with renewals in 2025, as per Section 1012.585(3)(f) F.S., ANYONE with the following areas on their Florida Teaching Certificate MUST acquire 40 hours of professional learning credits “specifically designed for students with characteristics of dyslexia, including the use of explicit, systematic, and sequential approaches to reading instruction, developing phonological and phonemic awareness, decoding, and implementing multisensory intervention strategies:”

                                • Elementary Education (K-6)
                                • Prekindergarten/Primary Education (age 3 through grade 3)
                                • Elementary Education (grades 1-6), Primary Education (grades K-3)
                                • English (grades 1-6), Middle Grades English (grades 5-9)
                                • Middle Grades Integrated Curriculum (grades 5-9)
                                • English (6-12)
                                • Reading (K-12)
                                • Reading (Endorsement)
                                • English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) (grades K-12)- this is certification ONLY- Endorsement does not fall into this category
                                • ESE (K-12) – this goes into effect for the 2025-2030 validity period.  These folks will need the 40 hours to renew by 6/30/ 2025.  Memo

HOW CAN I EARN the 40 Hours of Reading Points for Certification Renewal? (You need 40 Reading Points EVERY five years)

*Please Note* You may only earn credit ONCE for a course!

The following are currently the only methods to fulfill this requirement:

 

  • Exploring Structured Literacy (40 hours)   (FDLRS) To Receive CreditSubmit certificate of completion to PL Department upon completion.  This course may only be offered between August 10 – April 30 each school year as per FDLRS/FLDOE. 
  • Science of Reading: An Introduction (5 hours)   (FDLRS) To Receive Credit: Submit certificate of completion to PL Department upon completion.
  • Literacy  Micro-Credential-ELEMENTARY (60 hours)  (UF Flamingo) To Receive CreditSubmit transcript/certificate of completion to PL Department upon completion.  This course is offered throughUF Flamingo $1000 Stipend for TEACHERS !  Please refer to the Literacy Matrix and Micro-Credential web pages for full eligibility and completion guidelines and direct all questions to [email protected].
  • Literacy  Micro-Credential-SECONDARY (60 hours)  (UF Flamingo) To Receive CreditSubmit transcript/certificate of completion to PL Department upon completion.  This course is offered throughUF Flamingo. $1000 Stipend for TEACHERS !  Please refer to the Literacy Matrix and Micro-Credential web pages for full eligibility and completion guidelines and direct all questions to [email protected].
  • Reading Endorsement Coursework (60 hours each course)  (Contact your certification specialist to verify that credit was earned within the appropriate timeframe.)  Courses offered through SJCSD- see information under Endorsement Courses  $2000 Stipend for TEACHERS!  Please refer to the Literacy Matrix and Micro-Credential web pages for full eligibility and completion guidelines and direct all questions to [email protected].

7.  Complete the course according to the guidelines provided by your course facilitator

8.  Complete the Course Survey

9.  Receive the Certificate of Completion from your course facilitator

10.  Submit the Certificate of Completion to the Professional Learning Department by uploading into BusinessPlus Certificates folder

3.  Click:  Sign In (If you don’t have a FDLRS account, click Register and create a free account)

4.  Scroll through: Course Catalog

5.  Click: Reading/Math and scroll to Science of Reading:  An Introduction

6. Click: Enroll

6.  Complete the course online

7.  Complete the written task(s)

8.  Submit the written task and the verification form to your Principal/Supervisor or ILC for review

9.  Upload the signed verification form as your last assignment into the course

10.  Complete the Course Survey

11.  Save your Certificate of Completion

12. Submit the Certificate of Completion to the Professional Learning Department by uploading into BusinessPlus Certificates folder
