2020

Message from the Superintendent – September 9, 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope that the first week of school was a positive experience for your child.  This has been the most challenging start to a school year that we have ever faced.  Our teachers and staff have worked countless hours to prepare for an educational model that is complex and very demanding.  I am very proud of the work of our schools and know that we are continuously refining and streamlining the processes and learning platforms we are using.

Many of our teachers are teaching students in a classroom while also simultaneously delivering instruction to students at home.  While we are committed to keeping all children on pace and focused on the same high standards, the way in which learning occurs will vary from the classroom to the distance learning setting.   Your child’s teacher is tasked with preparing variations in lessons because students are on two platforms.  Teachers need time to adjust to the demands of dual platforms and develop the most effective strategies that can be sustained.

To that end, I ask that parents use the same methods of communication that you have used prior to the pandemic.  Teachers cannot respond to parent communication during the school day while teaching.  The Schoology instructional platform is specifically designed as an instructional management system to be used by the teacher and the student.

The mobility of students between brick and mortar and distance learning is also a significant challenge to schools.  We understand that there are times when students move from one platform to the other perhaps due to COVID-19 exposure and extended quarantine, but it is vital that families remain committed to the option that was chosen to begin the school year.

This week is the start of many activities that make the school experience fulfilling for students and families.  High school athletics and extracurricular activities will allow very limited attendance for spectators.   It is imperative to maintain the COVID-19 protocols at all school activities and important to understand that there may be different protocols for events in other school districts.

Lastly, I want to share our thanks to all parents for your patience, suggestions and support as we have navigated this school year.   As we do not know the duration of this pandemic, we are prepared to adapt and modify as needed throughout this school year.  We will continue to provide feedback including the school district COVID-19 data located on our website.

Sincerely,

Tim Forson
Superintendent of Schools
St. Johns County School District

SJCSD Fall Athletics

The St. Johns County School District’s (SJCSD) fall high school athletic season formally opened with practices August 24. Contests will begin Friday, September 11 with all six high schools participating in football games. In alignment with the SJCSD re-opening plan, we will follow specific COVID-19 protocols with all athletic events. Stadium and gymnasiums will be limited to 30% spectator capacity to ensure social distancing to start the season.

Each high school will be developing ticketing strategies utilizing online sales.  Masks will be required to enter the stadium/gymnasium until seated. Masks will also be required when exiting the seated area and whenever social distancing is not possible.

We look forward to the start of the season and providing a safe environment for all athletes, spectators and event staff.

Important Health Services Information

Good Evening SJCSD Parents and Guardians,

In an effort to provide you with information and guidance on COVID-19 and being healthy and safe at school, our Health Services Department has provided a Student Health Screening Entry Form. This health screening form will help you to assess your child daily for a variety of symptoms and to ask answer questions about contact your child may have had.

A second document is the Student Symptom Criteria Checklist. This document will be used by the school nurse at your child’s school to determine symptoms that he/she may be experiencing and will require a medical evaluation and instructions for returning to school.

Lastly, we have included a presentation, the SJCSD Student Day with PPE video, showing some of the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that will be used throughout the school day. Thank you for your continued support as we work to keep our students and staff safe and healthy.

Sincerely,

Kyle Dresback
Associate Superintendent of Student Support Services
St. Johns County School District

Regions Bank Donates Laptops to St. Johns County Students

Take Stock in Children
Jacksonville Market Executive Jim Richardson personally delivered the computers to graduates.

Regions Bank recently provided 24 laptops to the St. Johns County chapter of Take Stock in Children (TSIC), a nonprofit that delivers academic support and mentorship to students as early as seventh grade. In addition, associates have volunteered with the organization to provide financial wellness training for parents.

Students supported by TSIC agree to maintain a 2.5 grade-point average, graduate and remain drug and crime free. If they honor the agreement, TSIC provides scholarship assistance for two years of higher education.

Message from the Superintendent – August 11, 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope that you and your family are well and looking forward to the start of a new school year. Teachers and staff have returned to work and are busy planning for the unique challenges that this year will likely bring. Our teachers are excited and anxiously awaiting the arrival of students after this long period without face-to-face learning. Rest assured, we are prepared whether your child will be instructed face-to-face or through a virtual pathway. I support and appreciate the decision that you have made for your family.

As we have planned for both virtual and brick and mortar learning formats, we have continued to refine our state approved COVID-19 Return to School Plan. For families who have chosen one of the online options, much of your communication will occur in a virtual manner.

As students start the year at the school physically or transition back into the school after the year begins, it will be imperative that all students follow the safety protocols established by the district. Regular screening by parents at home and compliance with wearing masks at school will be necessary to minimize the health risks to students and school staff. All schools will have appropriate protective equipment for students and staff, and will be diligent in providing clean, sanitized facilities for learning.

Students will always be required to wear facial masks if they cannot or do not social distance. It is our goal to communicate and work with students and families related to school-based requirements and expectations embedded in our Return to School Plan. Not everyone will agree with the enforcement of masks, but it is our responsibility to keep safety at school the highest priority. Refusal to wear a mask may lead to a student being assigned to the Distance Learning platform for a specified period of time.

For those students returning to the brick and mortar platform, we ask that parents use the next two weeks to begin the habit of daily health screening and wearing of masks. I am confident that by working together and complying with procedures, we will have a wonderful start to the school year!

Start of School Postponed Until August 31

The school calendar for 2020-2021 has been revised to include a student start date of August 31, 2020 and the extension of the school year into June 2021. The purpose of this change is to allow time for schools to build instructional schedules based on current requests by parents and provide an opportunity to monitor COVID-19 virus spread in the hope that cases will begin to decline in St. Johns County during August. More specific calendar adjustments will be made and posted on the district website as approved.

Message from the Superintendent – July 1, 2020

To St. Johns County School District Parents and Guardians,

I want to share an update as we prepare for the upcoming school year.   I also want to be transparent about the challenges that remain and will likely be present on August 10.

We are working to research the present data and utilize the expertise of health care professionals to determine the most appropriate response to the spread of COVID-19.  As many of you are aware, this is a very fluid situation and will likely continue to change during the school year.   I believe it is important to recognize these changing conditions and prepare parents, students and staff for a school year that will have to be flexible and adaptable to the current circumstances.

While the focus and primary goal of the school district is to have all students return to school on August 10, we must keep the health and safety of all members of the school community as the top priority.   We are making purchases of protective materials that will assist in maintaining a safe environment at our schools and on buses.  There will likely be situations arise that will require short term closure of schools or at least individual classrooms.  One of the most challenging issues is the use of facial coverings.  We understand the benefit of facial masks, but also the challenge this poses to young children and the wearing of masks for extended periods of time.

Many of you have submitted emails to me that have explained your concerns and preferences for how schools should operate this year.   What is certain is that whatever strategies are implemented there will be some parents and staff that are highly satisfied, some that are very disappointed and many that are somewhere in between.  I have tried to reply to as many messages as I can but admit that the volume does take away from time on task to build the best system possible for the new school year.   I will continue to read all messages and forward them to our planning team when appropriate.  Admittedly, many of the questions being asked do not have a clear answer today.

I want to acknowledge the difficult decision your family must make if you are not comfortable with your child returning to the school setting.   You will be receiving communication tomorrow regarding the return to school and preferences for your child. I encourage you to review and respond with the most appropriate choice for your family, knowing that flexibility will be most important in this changing environment.  I appreciate your continued support and patience.

Sincerely,

Tim Forson
Superintendent

Parent Survey #2 – Planning for August

Dear SJCSD Parents and Guardians,

As we plan to re-open for the 2020-2021 school year, we continue to seek parent input. Please visit our website to take a brief survey that I would like you to complete. Thank you in advance for taking the time to provide us your feedback. This survey will close on Thursday, June 18, 2020.

The State released its health and instructional recommendations in the Reopening Florida Schools and the CARES Act plan on June 11th. The health recommendations are listed on pages 35-71 of the plan (http://www.fldoe.org/core/fileparse.php/19861/urlt/FLDOEReopeningCARESAct.pdf). These recommendations are embedded within our school-based health protocols and are differentiated by level of community spread.

Look for additional communication in the coming weeks regarding our district’s reopening plan.
Thank you for taking the time to fill out this short survey.

Sincerely,

Tim Forson

Message from the Superintendent – June 16, 2020

To the St. Johns County School District Families,

This year we have experienced fragmentation in our society and anxiety in our lives. The tragic death of George Floyd has been the catalyst for social unrest and protests that speak to the inequities felt by the black community. As superintendent, I believe it is paramount that our schools educate and support children as they develop into young adults with the knowledge to take the next steps in their lives and the character to help build a better world for themselves and their families.

Our mission statement reads that we “will inspire good character and lifelong learning in all students, creating educated and caring contributors to the world.” Our core values go on to include the six pillars of Character Counts! and understanding that “in order to grow and thrive, individuals need caring relationships and a nurturing environment.” To accomplish our mission, we must teach students how to think for themselves, treat everyone with respect, and demonstrate caring and compassion to one another. It is important that moving forward, we engage our students in conversations about the issues of equity, opportunity, responsible citizenship and other important issues that face our country.

We strive to be a better school district every day and foster a positive supportive school community, that is free of prejudice, discrimination and racism. I am committed to continuing our hiring efforts to create a more diverse teacher and administrative workforce that best represents our students and the community we serve.

Since 1998, the St. Johns County School District has embraced Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship in the Character Counts! program. At this time, my hope is that we will lean on these foundational pillars of character to learn, teach, and grow as one community together. The biases that we each carry with us can only be confronted by our understanding and willingness to look through the lens of another. We must accept our differences in order to embrace each other as we humbly work together as one community and country. I am committed that our school system will continue to build a school community of inclusion and support, to develop trust, caring and respect in our students and staff.

Sincerely,

Tim Forson

All County Middle and High School Art Shows

All County High School Art Show

This year marked the 15th anniversary of our partnership with the St. Augustine Art Association (STAAA). Our students once again demonstrated a high level of creativity and excellence under the guidance of their high school art teachers. Many of these student artists are also the product of those who taught them in elementary and or middle school. We are proud of each of you! Regrettably, the show was cut short due to the pandemic and the doors of STAAA have been closed since the middle of March.

View a virtual tour of the All County High School Art Show.

All County Middle School Art Show

This year marks the 10th anniversary of St. Johns County School District’s partnership with STAAA, but without public access to the gallery we were not able to host a literal show. As an alternative, the STAAA launched a virtual show of our middle school artists on their website on Monday, May 25, 2020. This year’s show saw 100% participation from our 13 schools and 18 teachers with middle school art programs and included over 80 works featuring a variety of mediums and artistic expressions.
