Planning, Accountability and Assessment Update – February 2018
As the spring assessment season quickly approaches, school testing coordinators are busy training staff and scheduling students for practice testing.
Instructional Materials Adoption
The St. Johns County School Board recently conducted a hearing to receive comment from the community related to the science instructional resources adoption. Committees composed of teachers, district content experts, parents and community members, who served on the adoption committee, declared their top recommendations.
Spelling Bee
The St. Johns County Spelling Bee was held January 17 at First Coast Technical College. Students in grades fifth through eighth from 33 public and private schools participated.
The Character Cup
The Character Cup, a student-centered event highlighting physical education, links academics and character education through athletic competition. Two hundred student-athletes representing 20 elementary schools participated in the 2017 event and this year’s event looks to be even bigger and better.
The St. Johns County Elementary Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics Fair
The St. Johns County Elementary Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Fair will be held at Palencia Elementary School Saturday, May 5 from 8 – 11 a.m.
Science Fair
The St Johns County Science Fair was February 7at First Coast Technical College (FCTC). The awards ceremony was held February 8 at FCTC.
Controlled Open Enrollment for the 2018-2019 School Year
From January 29 – February 26 families residing within and outside of St. Johns County may apply for their child to attend PVPV/Rawlings Elementary School or The Webster School for the 2018-2019 school year through the Controlled Open Enrollment Process.
St. Johns River State College (SJRSC) Collegiate High School Program
SJRSC’s new Collegiate High School Program is a three-year program that outlines the path for qualified students to complete 60-credits of dual enrollment coursework, culminating in both a standard high school diploma as well as an Associate of Arts (AA) degree upon completing four years of high school.
District Crisis Response Team
The purpose of the Johns County School District Crisis Response Team (DCRT) is to prepare for and respond to a crisis with a goal of helping individuals and groups cope and begin the healing process after a tragedy.
School Guidance and Counseling
2018 National School Counseling Week, “School Counselors: Helping Students Reach for the Stars,” was celebrated February 5-9 to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems.
Health Services News
On the January 29 Inservice Day, Nemours Children’s Clinic Endocrinology Dept. will be providing in-depth training for school nurses on the latest trends and treatments for diabetes in children. There will be a focus on how to keep students with diabetes safe at school and manage their disease process while helping them succeed academically.
Student Services Week
The St. Johns County School Board proclaimed February 5-9 as Student Services Week during their February School Meeting.
Student Hardship Transfer Applications
The School Services Department began the process of accepting student hardship transfer applications for the 2018-2019 school year January 17.
