Message From the Superintendent – August 24, 2021

Dear SJCSD Parents/Guardians,

First, I want to thank you for your support and preparation which led to an outstanding first week of school with your children.   Again, this year we find ourselves working in the midst of the COVID pandemic.  Although many conditions have changed, we are still in a situation that calls for us to be vigilant in our efforts to protect ourselves and the children we serve.  Due to the rate of positive cases that are coming into school, the St. Johns County School District is mandating face masks or face shields for all employees and visitors for the next 30 days.  In accordance with Executive Order 2021-175, this temporary mandate does not apply to students. This is effective tomorrow, August 25, 2021, and we will evaluate this mandate at the end of the 30-day period ending, September 23, 2021.

Sincerely,
Tim Forson
Superintendent of Schools
St. Johns County School District

Opening Day 2021

The student count for the St. Johns County School District (SJCSD) the first day of school, August 16, was 41,744, an increase of 4,986 students or 13.6% over last year’s first day number of 36,758. St. Johns County continues to be one of the fastest growing school districts in the state, however; a portion of this extreme growth reflects students returning to in-person learning.

The high school student count was 14,051 with 3,096 students at Bartram Trail High School, 2,297 at Creekside High School, 1,336 at Pedro Menendez High School, 2,340 at Allen D. Nease High School, 1,814 at Ponte Vedra High School, and 1,642 at St. Augustine High School. The opening day number for the new high school, Tocoi Creek, was 1,281. There were also 221 students in attendance at St. Johns Technical High School.

Middle school attendance totaled 6,869, with student headcounts ranging from 676 at Sebastian Middle School to 1,301 at Pacetti Bay Middle School. The other first day figures were Alice B. Landrum Middle School with 1,162, Fruit Cove Middle School with 1,083, R. J. Murray Middle School with 563, Gamble Rogers Middle School with 835, and Switzerland Point Middle School with 1,249.

The district’s K-8 schools totaled 9,398. Liberty Pines Academy had a first day headcount of 1,289, Patriot Oaks Academy with 1,153, Valley Ridge Academy with 1,136; Freedom Crossing Academy with 1,937, Palm Valley Academy with 1,358, Mill Creek Academy with 1,556 and new district’s new K-8, Pine Island Academy, with 969.

The elementary school population totaled 11,282. This count only includes approximately 25% of all kindergarten students since schools stagger the kindergarten start date over a four-day period. Another 389 students attended the district’s alternative, charter and Department of Juvenile Justice schools.

First Coast Technical College has 140 students who attended its adult education programs at the St. Augustine and North campuses. This number does not include those students enrolled in night programs that start today.

“The hard work and dedication from administration, teachers and support staff to make opening day the very best was impressive,” said Superintendent Tim Forson. “As I visited schools it was wonderful to see the excitement of students as they entered the buildings eager to learn, engage with friends, and get acquainted with their teachers.”

“Transportation, food service, custodial and maintenance staff are doing an excellent job handling their responsibilities and taking care of students. The St. Johns Sheriff’s Office, St. Augustine Police Department, Public Service Assistants and Crossing Guards are supporting our operations and adding another layer of safety and security to our campuses. Lastly, I want to say a huge thank you to our parents and families as we manage the beginning of the school year.”

SJCSD staff will continue to monitor attendance numbers, balance classrooms and refine bus routes throughout the coming weeks.

Florida Division of Emergency Management Announces St. Johns County School District Adds More Than 5,000 Hurricane Shelter Spaces

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) announced the St. Johns County School District has completed a two-year shelter retrofit project that added 5,141 additional hurricane shelter spaces and 133 additional special needs hurricane shelter spaces through $1.2 million in funding. The shelter spaces were added to Switzerland Point Middle School and Pacetti Bay Middle School.

“As a state, it is our responsibility to make sure we make every effort to keep people safe, and that includes having adequate shelter space,” said FDEM Director Jared Moskowitz. “This project addresses a need St. Johns County experienced during Hurricane Matthew, and sets an example for how we can learn from past storms to build more resilient communities.”

“We are grateful for the state’s assistance as we work to ensure every County resident has a safe place to go during an emergency,” said St. Johns County School District Superintendent Tim Forson. “Through this program, not only have we added more shelter spaces, but we have the extra benefit of making our schools more resilient.”

“Nothing is more important than the safety of our residents, and we are grateful to the Governor and Division of Emergency Management for supporting their safety through this project,” said St. Johns County Administrator Hunter Conrad. “The additional spaces will allow us to provide improved protection for our special needs populations during future hurricane seasons.”

This project follows Hurricane Matthew’s impact on St. John’s County in 2016 and was funded and supported by the Hurricane Loss Mitigation Program and the Hurricane Shelter Deficit Reduction Program. These programs promote community resiliency through retrofits made to hurricane shelters and to residential and commercial properties.

Since 2016, the number of counties in Florida that have adequate space for Florida’s special needs populations has increased by 60 percent, from 21 in to 34 counties in 2020. Cities, counties and school districts have benefitted from shelter retrofit funding by increasing their community’s hurricane shelter space.

In the last two years, more than 20,000 new shelter spaces have been added in Florida. By the end of 2020, 31,000 additional shelter spaces are expected across the state.

New Principal Appointments for 2019/2020

Superintendent Tim Forson has announced two principal appointments for the 2019/2020 school year. Travis Brown, assistant principal at St. Augustine High School, has been selected to be the principal of R.J. Murray Middle School (MMS). Brown will replace Paula Steele who has been serving as interim principal at MMS. She will resume her duties as the director of Leadership Development within the St. Johns County School District (SJCSD).

“Kirstie has been an exceptional leader at SPMS,” said Forson. “I am confident she will continue to create opportunities for success and leadership at SMS whether it is for her students or the staff she serves.”

Gabaldon has a bachelor’s degree from the University of East Anglia, England and a master’s degree from UNF.
