Extreme Heat Protocols for Schools
When outdoor temperature exceeds 85 degrees, school leaders will monitor and communicate decisions regarding outdoor activities for K-12 Physical Education, K-12 School Sponsored Activities, Recess and Extended Day. The heat index (“real feel/feels like”) will guide decisions. What is heat index? How hot it feels to the body when the air temperature (in Fahrenheit) and relative humidity are combined. Also known as “real feel” or “feels like.”
Heat Index Guide
Designed to help protect students from incurring heat-related illnesses or problems, school personnel will reference the Heat Index Guide to modify and/or suspend outdoor activities. This guide applies to K-12 Physical Education, K-12 School Sponsored Activities, K-5 Recess and Extended Day. High School Athletics and Marching Band must reference the Zachary Martin Act linked below.
- heat index is less than 95 degrees – Normal outdoor activities
- heat index is 95 to 98 degrees – Outdoor activities should be limited or may be cancelled
- heat index is 99 degrees or above – Outdoor activities will be cancelled.
Playground equipment must be considered. Is it too hot for students to touch?
Hydration should be encouraged frequently before, during and after outdoor activities.
Medical Conditions must be considered.
If students are outdoors, teachers should be aware of medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, allergies, medications, or other conditions which may place students at higher risk for heat-related illness. Students should not be outside if the parent has advised the school their child should not participate in outdoor activities due to the possibility of heat-related illness.
Sunscreen
Students may possess and use a topical sunscreen product while on school property without a physician note or prescription if it is approved by the United States Food & Drug Administration for over-the-counter use.
Athletics & Marching Band
All teams are required to follow the Zachary Martin Act.

FortifyFL
FortifyFL is a mobile app and web-based tool that allows students, parents, and community members in Florida to anonymously report suspicious activities, potential threats, or safety concerns related to schools. The website and the app immediately forwards these reports to appropriate law enforcement agencies and school officials for rapid response. It was developed as part of Florida’s school safety initiatives following the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy in 2018.
In response to a high volume of false tips being submitted through FortifyFL, the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) requires school districts to provide instruction on the Proper Use of FortifyFL to parents and guardians.
School Access
School access (proceeding past the front office of any school) is required for every individual that is not a staff member of the St. Johns County School District. This is done through completion of the district’s volunteer application. School access is good for 3 years. For help completing the online application, please call (904) 547-3945.
Important Dates from the Transportation Department
Please take note of the following important dates from the Transportation Department leading up to the start of school.
- Wednesday, July 30, 2025 – School bus routes will be released to families via BusPlanner and the Chipmunk app
- Wednesday, July 30, 2025 – First rehearsal of bus routes – Over 250 school bus drivers will go test their bus routes
- Wednesday, August 6, 2025 – Second rehearsal of bus routes – School bus drivers will test bus routes again
- Monday, August 11, 2025 – Students report to class
As a reminder, beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, all student pick-up and drop-off times and locations will be provided exclusively through BusPlanner and will no longer be available on Home Access Center (HAC).
Families who have not yet logged in to the BusPlanner website or the Chipmunk app are strongly encouraged to create an account before the end of the school year. This will help ensure that you are able to access your child’s 2025-2026 bus schedule when schedules are released during the last week of July 2025.

Summer 2025 High School Facility Use
In an effort to promote community health and well-being this summer, the St. Johns County School District (SJCSD) will open its high school facilities to the public on select Wednesday evenings throughout the summer.

Summer Hours
During the summer from June 2 through July 31, the office hours for all schools and District departments for public access are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. All schools and District departments will be closed on Fridays. This schedule support the District’s energy cost savings effort.
