{"id":203,"date":"2020-10-19T15:49:40","date_gmt":"2020-10-19T19:49:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stjohns.k12.fl.us\/sdfs\/?page_id=203"},"modified":"2020-10-19T15:50:25","modified_gmt":"2020-10-19T19:50:25","slug":"teen-dating","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.stjohns.k12.fl.us\/sdfs\/teen-dating\/","title":{"rendered":"Teen Dating Violence Prevention Education &#038; Resources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>DEFINING UNHEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS &amp; DATING ABUSE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dating abuse is a <strong>pattern of destructive behaviors used to exert power and control <\/strong>over a dating partner. While we define dating violence as a pattern, that doesn\u2019t mean the first instance of abuse is not dating violence. It just recognizes that dating violence usually involves a series of abusive behaviors over a course of time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dating violence can happen to anyone<\/strong>, regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation or background.<\/p>\n<p>Drugs and alcohol can affect a person\u2019s judgment and behavior, but they <strong>do not excuse abuse or violence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>DATING VIOLENCE CAN BE:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Physical:<\/em><\/strong> hitting, slapping, choking, kicking<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Emotional\/Verbal:<\/em><\/strong> putting you down; embarrassing you in public (online or off); threatening you in any way; telling you what to do or what to wear<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Sexual:<\/em><\/strong> pressuring or forcing you to do anything sexual, including sexting;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Financial:<\/em><\/strong> taking your paychecks; preventing you from working<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Digital<\/em><\/strong><em>: <\/em>sending threats via text, social media or email; stalking or humiliating you on social media; logging into your social media or email accounts without permission; forcing you to share passwords<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>WARNING SIGNS OF ABUSE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Constantly putting someone down<\/li>\n<li>Extreme jealousy or insecurity<\/li>\n<li>Explosive temper<\/li>\n<li>Isolating someone from their family or friends, dictating who they can see or hang out with<\/li>\n<li>Mood swings (nice one minute and angry the next)<\/li>\n<li>Checking someone\u2019s cell phone, social media or email without permission<\/li>\n<li>Physically hurting someone in any way<\/li>\n<li>Possessiveness<\/li>\n<li>Telling someone what to do or what to wear<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>DEFINING HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Speak Up. <\/em><\/strong>In a healthy relationship, if something is bothering them, it\u2019s best to talk about it instead of holding it in.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Respect Each Other. <\/em><\/strong>Each partner\u2019s wishes and feelings have value. Let each other know they are making an effort to keep their ideas in mind.\u00a0 Mutual respect is essential in maintaining healthy relationships.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Compromise. <\/em><\/strong>Disagreements are a natural part of healthy relationships, but it\u2019s important that they find a way to compromise if they disagree on something. They should try to solve conflicts in a fair and rational way.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Be Supportive. <\/em><\/strong>Offer reassurance and encouragement to each other in a relationship. Also, partners should let each other know when they need their support. Healthy relationships are about building each other up, not putting each other down.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Respect Each Other\u2019s Privacy. <\/em><\/strong>Just because someone is in a relationship doesn\u2019t mean they have to share everything and constantly be together.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>SETTING HEALTHY BOUNDARIES<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Healthy boundaries shouldn\u2019t restrict someone\u2019s ability to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Go out with their friends without their partner.<\/li>\n<li>Participate in activities and hobbies they like.<\/li>\n<li>Not have to share passwords to their email, social media accounts or phone.<\/li>\n<li>Respect each other\u2019s individual likes and needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>IF YOU THINK YOU ARE IN AN UNHEALTHY RELATIONSHIP, TELL SOMEONE.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Support Systems<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Family<\/li>\n<li>School Counselor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>National Teen Dating Abuse Hotline<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loveisrespect.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Love is Respect<\/a><br \/>\nCall or text LOVEIS to 1-866-331-9474<br \/>\nChat live at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loveisrespect.org\/get-help\/\">www.loveisrespect.org\/get-help\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DEFINING UNHEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS &amp; DATING ABUSE Dating abuse is a pattern of destructive behaviors used to exert power and control over a dating partner.
