What is Clinical Education?

“Clinical education” refers to programs that provide developing professionals with practical and skills-oriented instruction under the supervision of a skilled practitioner.
A clinical educator mentors another teacher or pre-service teacher and must demonstrate the ability to work with other adults in a mentoring relationship as well as expertise in the four areas identified by FLDOE including:
- Skill one: Growth Mindset
- Skill two: Content Planning Conferences
- Skill three: Observers and Diagnosticians
- Skill four: Targeted Feedback
Who needs Clinical Education Training?
- Any school district or instructional personnel who mentors a current or pre-service teacher (including field experiences or internships)
- Any personnel in postsecondary teacher preparation programs who instruct or supervise field experience courses or internships 1012.56(8)(a), F.S.; 1004.04(5) (F.S.)
How Do I Acquire Clinical Education Training in St. Johns County School District?
Due to updated FLDOE requirements, to become a Clinical Educator in St. Johns County School District, you must have completed Clinical Educator (CET) training in St. Johns County School District between June 2019 and the present. Any previous Clinical Educator Training will no longer fulfill the qualifications needed to mentor in any capacity (i.e., intern students, practicum students, new teachers, new hires, struggling teachers, teachers working towards completing the general knowledge certification exam, etc.)
The training is comprised of:
- Two face-to-face meetings
- Five online modules to be completed between the two face-to-face meetings
The Clinical Educator Training is offered through the St. Johns County School District Professional Development Department* to teachers who meet the pre-identified criteria via an application process. The application is an online internal process that includes uploading Principal Recommendation and Summative Evaluation documentation.

- Teachers selected for this program must exhibit a clear understanding of how to access and interpret state standards- including the unpacking and planning process
- The potential mentor must have an understanding of andragogy- how to work with adults
- The potential mentor should come with a willingness to serve
- Open Mindset- the potential mentor must possess active listening skills
- Reflective Practices- the potential mentor should demonstrate clear reflective practices
- Evaluation- the potential mentor must have Summative Evaluation ratings of Effective or Highly Effective for the immediately preceding school year in St. Johns County School District
- Evaluation- the potential mentor must have at least two additional years of historical Summative Evaluation ratings of Effective or Highly Effective (or equivalent from another state to be reviewed and determined by the Professional Development and Evaluations Department)
- Experience- the potential mentor must have a minimum of three years of instructional experience
- Experience- the potential mentor must have a minimum of one year of instructional experience in SJCSD

- Once the Application has been submitted complete with Principal Recommendation and Summative Evaluation documentation, the PD Team will review the information and contact participants with the registration link

- Those Clinical Educator Trained individuals who serve as mentors in any capacity may earn up to a total of 40 inservice credits each school year
- Hours will be submitted via an official Mentoring Log via the Mentor TEAM in May of each school year
- Opportunities to mentor within the Professional Learning Certification Program for those who are seeking alternative certification in SJCSD may have other opportunities for compensation as well~ Contact Valerie Etienne-Leveille for more information

*Please note as of August 2021, no outside provided training will count towards CET Qualification. Districts are no longer accepting reciprocity (transfer) of the Clinical Educator Training.
