{"id":25,"date":"2015-04-15T15:30:03","date_gmt":"2015-04-15T19:30:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stjohns.k12.fl.us\/health\/?page_id=25"},"modified":"2025-07-16T10:09:50","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T14:09:50","slug":"medication","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.stjohns.k12.fl.us\/health\/medication\/","title":{"rendered":"Administration of Medication During School Hours"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Florida Statute 1006.062, as well as St. Johns County School Board Rule 5.15, authorizes school personnel to assist the student in the administration of prescription medications.\u00a0 Parents\/Guardians are encouraged to administer medications at home prior to or after school hours.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leg.state.fl.us\/statutes\/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&amp;Search_String=&amp;URL=1000-1099\/1006\/Sections\/1006.062.html\">Florida Statue 1006.062 &#8211; Administration of medication and provision of medical services by district school board personnel<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stjohns.k12.fl.us\/board\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2015\/02\/5_15.pdf\">School Board Rule 5.15 &#8211; Administration of Medication During School Hours<\/a><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parent\/Guardian Medication Policy Guidelines and Authorization Form<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If medication is necessary during the school day, there are guidelines that must be followed to keep your student safe.\u00a0 Please click below to read the guidelines for parents\/guardians.\u00a0 An authorization form must be completed and signed by the parent\/guardian to assist in the administration of medication\/treatment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stjohns.k12.fl.us\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/57\/2025\/07\/Medical-Policy.pdf\">Medication Policy<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stjohns.k12.fl.us\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/57\/2023\/08\/Authorization-to-Assist-in-the-Administration-of-Medication-Treatment-1.pdf\">Authorization to Assist in the Administration of Medication Treatment<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Asthmatic Students:\u00a0 Possession of Inhalers &#8211; Florida Statute 1002.20(3)(h)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Florida law states that an asthmatic student may carry a prescribed metered dose inhaler on his\/her person while in school with approval from his\/her parent <strong><em>and<\/em><\/strong> physician.\u00a0 Parents must download and complete the section on the authorization form listed above before a student may carry and self-administer his\/her metered dose inhaler.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Permission for Student to Self-Administer Non-Prescription Medication<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>School Board Policy 5.15 &#8211; Administration of Medication during school hours, states that &#8220;all prescription and non-prescription medication administered by the school at the elementary, middle and high school level must be directed by a physician who has determined that a student&#8217;s health and well-being requires medication during school hours.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">All non-prescription medication in the possession of students at the middle and high school, not administered by the school, requires written permission from the parent to the school.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stjohns.k12.fl.us\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/57\/2024\/04\/Parent-Permission-for-Student-to-Self-Administer-Non-Prescription-Medication.pdf\">Parent Permission for Student to Self-Administer Non-Prescription Medication<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Florida Statute 1006.062, as well as St. Johns County School Board Rule 5.15, authorizes school personnel to assist the student in the administration of prescription medications.\u00a0 Parents\/Guardians are encouraged to administer medications at home prior to or after school hours.
