Transportation Department Update

  • Planning ahead to ensure due diligence, the Transportation Department is developing school bus routes for the 2018-2019 school year to include establishing transportation services to the new K-8 schools in the Aberdeen and Nocatee communities and sustaining transportation services for rising 5th, 7th, and 8th graders grandfathered at their current zoned schools.
  • On Friday, March 16, the Transportation Department will be conducting the annual school bus rodeo at the First Coast Technical College’s Public Safety Academy Test Track. The event is designed to hone the skills of school bus operators and attendants under stressful and challenging conditions while competing against their peers.
  • The Transportation Department will receive 29 new school buses like the Thomas C2 School Bus shown below in later this spring. The most significant enhancement to the new school buses is the pulsating high intensity student lights on the outside of the bus designed to stop motorists when buses are loading and discharging student riders.
  • The Transportation Department has successfully employed 48 bus operators and bus attendants via all recruitment efforts so far this school year.
  • Given current demands and the significant growth in St Johns County, the Transportation Department is continuously hiring school bus operators. Full time positions with benefits available now.
