Academy Awards

JEA will be recognized as the 2009-2010 Outstanding Business Partner of the Year at the annual Career “Academy Awards” being held at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 6. The event is being hosted by Bozard Ford Company located at 540 Prime Outlets Boulevard.
JEA has been a partner with the Academy of Environmental and Urban Planning at Creekside High School since its inception in 2008 and the Stellar Academy of Engineering at Nease High School.  JEA actively helped create the vision for these academies.
Carol Higley, Manager of Corporate Workforce Planning for JEA, serves as the primary liaison and assists with curriculum review, strategic planning, business partner recruitment, and training and placement of student interns interested in engineering. The company also offers externships to teachers to keep them up-to-date on industry trends.
The Academy Awards program highlights the major academy accomplishments during the past year. In addition to the overall award, more than 50 different business partners will be recognized for their support of career academies.
Five teams of students who competed in Project Green, a student design competition held last week, will showcase their projects. Students in all engineering-focused academies took the challenge to identify a community issue, create a “green” solution and make a 3D model.  District-wide judges included experts from the U.S. Green Builder’s Council, JEA, and St. Augustine’s Public Works.  The winners will receive cash prizes.
There are currently 14 career academies in the county’s six public high schools. Academies are smaller learning communities within a high school that are aligned with a targeted high-skill, high-wage industry. Academies emphasize motivational and real-world activities including hands-on projects, business mentoring, internships and field trips.
National studies show that academies have a positive impact on student performance, including improved attendance, higher grades, increased graduation rates and higher college-bound rates.
Previous Business Partners of the Year include St. Augustine Airport Authority, Stellar, Northrop Grumman and VyStar Credit Union.
