Response to Intervention (RtI)
Welcome to the St. Johns County School District Problem Solving/ Response to Intervention (PS/RtI) website. The Problem Solving – Response to Intervention model is a process whereby schools are trained to analyze and target students’ academic and/or behavior problems so that quality and effective interventions can be implemented. Interventions are data driven and designed to facilitate student success.
St. Johns County is one of eight districts in the state of Florida that has been piloting PS/RtI as part of a state-wide project. Six elementary schools from the St. Johns County School District are participating in the project, which is in its third and final year. The District has also made the decision to begin using this process for ESE eligibility decisions, specifically for Specific Learning Disabilities, Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities, and Language Impaired beginning with the 2009-2010 school year. During the summer of 2009, all remaining elementary schools were trained in the process. Each school sent a team of professionals (i.e. administrators, counselors, school psychologists, instructional/literacy coaches, etc.) to a 4-module training presented by David Morell, Student Intervention Coordinator at South
Woods Elementary, and Teri Evans, School Psychologist for SJCSD.
Each school develops a multidisciplinary team which receives on-going coaching in the following core principles:
· We can effectively teach all children.
· Intervene early.
· Use a multi-tier model of service delivery.
· Use a problem-solving method to make decisions within a multi-tier model.
· Use research-based, scientifically validated interventions/instruction
· Monitor student progress to inform instruction.
· Use data to make decisions.
· Use assessment for three different purposes: universal screening, diagnostic and progress monitoring.
