Smartboard Page

SmartBoard: SmartBoard is one type of interactive whiteboard that is used to make lessons and instruction more engaging and interactive. The board works by connecting it directly to your computer through the USB port and then projecting the computer screen onto the board. Once oriented, the users finger essentially becomes the mouse. By touching the board, users can click, click and drag, open files, and so on. In the simplest form a SmartBoard essentially becomes a wireless mouse. Now any activity that was previously used with the mouse, can now become a class wide interactive activity. Users also have the capability to annotate on the screen by using the digital ink markers. The SmartBoard is an excellent tool to provide information to students and to get
them engaged in the lesson. The SmartBoard can also become an tool for center work or student collaboration projects.

Notebook Software: The program that is accompanied with the SmartBoard. This software allows for teachers to create vibrant and interactive lessons, as well as access a variety of tools for everyday classroom use. Notebook can be compared to PowerPoint in that teachers can create slides and make them interactive by inserting a variety types of media or linking to other slides or even or programs on the computer. The main aspect that provides such a rich learning environment is the gallery piece of the software. By exploring the Essentials for Educators and Lesson Activity Toolkit, teachers can find a variety of tools that will be exciting and engaging for their students. Once lessons are created they can then be displayed in full screen mode to fully engage the class
into the lesson and learning.

Airliner: Airliner is Smart Technologies version on an interactive slate. The Airliner, just as with the SmartBoard, can simply be described as a wireless mouse. A great benefit to the Airliner is that teachers or students are not tied to the computer or SmartBoard. When using the Airliner, users have the flexibility to roam around the classroom, but still have control of the computer or the SmartBoard. Another benefit is that a SmartBoard is not needed to use the Airliner. If a board is not present, users can simply display the computer screen onto a screen with the LCD projector, but now can still have the interactivity by using the Airliner rather than the computer mouse or the SmartBoard. Just as with the SmartBoard, the Airliner is accompanied with Notebook software.

Notebook Interactive Viewer: This software is created for users of other types of interactive boards or slates. Once the program is installed, users now have the capability to open and use created Notebook files / lessons. Users will have limited functionality, but still have the ability to engage in all of the interactive pieces of the lesson. This software is very beneficial for teachers who have other interactive technologies in their classrooms, but would still like the ability to engage students with Notebook lessons.
This software can be downloaded directly from Smart Technologies website. Once downloaded and installed, teachers can search for Notebook lessons or can access our Lessons page to find lessons that have been created throughout our district.
Other types of interactive technologies that may benefit from this software are Chalkboards, Mobis, Mimios, or Promethian Boards. |

Research: As SmartBoards and Interactive Whiteboards have become more prominent in today's classrooms, research is being done that provides evidence that instructional use of the board is helping to increase student achievement. Dr. Robert Marzano provides insight into this research during this interview given at the CUE 2009 conference. Watch the video to the right to get more details about the findings.
