CPS (Classroom Performance System), or commonly known as 'clickers' is widely used throughout our district to engage students and to receive immediate feedback on student comprehension.

The teacher assigns each student a 'clicker' and the students will then input their answers to questions asked verbally, on the screen or on paper.  The teacher will get instant feedback on class comprehension and can then pulll up reports on individual student performance.  One great aspect to using CPS is that students do not have to worry about other students knowing what they answered.  The teacher and students will see when each student answers, but they will not see what their response was.  This now gives students the confidence to answer without worrying what their peers will say.

IR (infrared) Pads:  This 'clicker' provides the opportunity for students to respond to up to eight multiple choice responses, true or false or yes / no.  This system works with a receiver that is plugged into a USB port on the computer.  Students must point their 'clicker' towards the receiver for their responses to be registered.  This works by line of sight, which is similiar to how television remote controls work.

RF (radio frequency) Pads:  This 'clicker' provides the opportunity for students to respond to up to eight multiple choice responses, true / false, yes / no, and this also allows for students to enter a numeric response.  This clicker provides an LCD display for students to view the quesiton number and their response and this works by radio frequecny, which means it does not have to be pointed at the receiver.  This system is very beneficial for math and science classes.

ExamView:  This is another tool that can be incorporated with the CPS system.  Many of the textbooks in our district are accompanied with ExamView questions.  These questions can be imported directly into CPS so you can now assess the entire class and get instant feedback on comprehension.  Students can respond to individual questions or they can respond at their own pace using the Student Paced mode of the system.

CPS is an excellent tool to get instant feedback and engagement with your students.  The application can be easily installed (should already be installed on all teacher issued machines in our district) on the computer and the system itself can simply be transferred between classes.  Our office has sets for checkout if teachers would like to use them in their classroom.  We are more than willing to offer training and to come into the classroom to do lessons with your students or to do a team teaching activity.  Please feel free to contact us if you are interested.
