Middle School Science

Middle School:  Our middle school science curriculum is driven by the Florida State Standards for Science and best instructional practices. We have excellent technological resources to engage our students as we teach.  Each school is unique, with some offering Pre-IB classes to ready students for our International Baccalaureate High School sites.  Some schools feature Pre AP and or gifted sections for science, in order to offer additional rigor for those that are up to the challenge.   8th grade students are required to take the FCAT 2.0 in the spring.  See the “curriculum and course standards” section for more specific information about course content, or the FCAT link, for more information about the FCAT.

High School Science

St. Johns County has a diverse range of Science courses available to our students.  Our schools feature instruction that is driven by the Florida State Standards for Science and best instructional practices.   We offer standard level and many honors level courses in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, with some schools offering Advanced Placement courses in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.  The International Baccalaureate Program is offered at Pedro Menendez High School and Allen D. Nease High School, in addition to their programs of study and The Advanced International Certificate of Education program (AICE) is offered at St. Augustine High School.

Several high schools feature academy programs that are specific to science.  In addition to the AICE program, St. Augustine High School is home to the Flagler Hospital Academy of Medical and Health Careers and the St. Johns County Aerospace Academy, in partnership with Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.  Creekside High School  is home to our Academy of Environmental and Urban Planning; Ponte Vedra High School houses our Academy of Biotechnology and Medical Research.

High School students must obtain a minimum of three credits in state approved  Science courses in order to graduate.   In the 2011-2012 school year, any student in a Biology 1 course will take a Florida  End of Course Exam which will comprise 30% of the student’s grade for the year.   In the 2012 school year and thereafter, students will be required to pass the state Biology End of Course Exam in order to receive one Biology  credit that is needed to graduate.
