Mission:
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of St. Johns County provides meaningful opportunities for people 55 years of age and better to assist children and adults in their educational pursuits, mobilize community volunteers for service, and assist not-for-profit agencies in St. Johns County with special support.
History and Statistics:
RSVP was created in 1969 by an amendment to the Older Americans Act and currently operates under the Domestic Volunteer Service Act of 1973 Article II, Part A, Section 201.
The St. Johns County office opened more than 24 years ago and has been sponsored by the St. Johns County School District for over 17 years. There are more than 15 sites with approximately 100 volunteers providing service in St. Johns County.
Funding:
Nationally – by the Corporation for National and Community Service
Locally – by the St. Johns County School District, corporate sponsorships and fundraising activities
Programs:
Educational Volunteers – Individuals assist students in the St. Johns County School District and other settings to succeed in their educational endeavors by tutoring and providing support in areas such as math, language arts, English as a second language, and others.
Senior Workers Available Today (SWAT) – Individuals and teams provide short-term assistance to local not-for-profit agencies.
America Reads! - Volunteers read to children in local Headstart, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten programs. The program’s goal is to promote literacy by engaging children in books through early exposure.
Intergenerational Mentors – Volunteers provide mentoring services to at risk youth in the St. Johns County School District.
