No Child Left Behind
Public School Choice
According to federal law, under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, districts are required to notify the parents of students attending schools receiving Title I, Part A funds of the schools Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). After an annual district review of the schools progress, the schools that do not meet the AYP standards for three or more years, are identified as Schools In Need of Improvement (SINI). These schools are required to offer parents the option of Public School Choice (PSC).
Once schools are identified as a SINI school, the district is required to notify the parents of the (PSC) option to transfer. This option allows parents the choice of sending their child to the districts schools of choice, which has not been identified as a SINI school, while providing transportation. This process is extended to each new incoming student, of schools receiving Title I, Part A funds, until the week after the Labor Day holiday. The election of PSC must be made at the time of registration. After that date, the Public School Choice option is not offered until the following school year. For more information on Public School Choice you may contact, Kathy Hansburry, NCLB Program Specialist, at (904) 547-3861 or the Florida Department of Education website listed.
