Dear Applicant, Thank you for considering one of the Programs of Study in St. Johns District Schools. The goal of these programs is to encourage continuous improvement through teamwork and individual dedication. You will be prepared for further education in academic and career areas which require post-secondary education at a college, university, community college or technical institute, and in career areas which are open for immediate employment upon graduation.
We welcome your application to one of the programs. On this site are the forms necessary to apply. Please complete all forms listed below by February 13, 2012. Notification of acceptance will be mailed out by each school by February 24, 2012. Applicants applying for the St. Johns County Center for the Arts, the International Baccalaureate (IB) programs, or the Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) program may be required to complete auditions or paperwork in addition to this site. Applicants that do not submit all required forms will be marked as incomplete and cause your application to be denied. It is the applicant’s responsibility to submit all required forms.
AICE / IB only: Teacher recomendations: (This form must be printed, given to your teachers, completed and sent to either Kim Hollis IB Coordinator at Nease High School, Dena Bechtle, AICE Coordinator at St. Augustine High School or Vicki Murphy, IB Coordinator at Pedro Menendez High School. Students applying for AICE and IB must have four current academic teacher recommendations which include math, science, social studies and language arts). Students must also mail a copy of your most recent report card to the school addressed to the attention of one of these program coordinators.
If you are applying for a Program of Study which is not in your home zone school, you must complete and submit the out-of-zone transfer request which is also located on this page. Only students residing in St. Johns County may apply. |
Policies and Procedures A Program of Study is defined as multi-year, specialized program that is available to students from across the district.
1. |
Applications for out-of-zone transfers made on the basis of a Program of Study must be made at the same time that an application to a Program of Study is made. |
2. |
Rising 11th and 12th grade students are ineligible for out-of-zone waivers to a new Program of Study. |
3. |
Each Program of Study sets expectations for academic progress, attendance and behavior. Should an out-of-zone transfer student not meet such expectations the following actions will ensue: |
|
a) The principal of the out-of-zone Program of Study school may initiate action to rescind a student’s out-of-zone waiver for failing grades, excessive school absences or tardies and/or recurrent discipline problems. |
b) Prior to rescinding a student’s out-of-zone waiver, the principal or designee shall notify the student’s parent/guardian in writing citing the reason for potential revocation the out-of-zone waiver. |
c) The parent/guardian shall be permitted a reasonable time and opportunity to address or correct the situation. |
d) If not corrected in a reasonable amount of time, the principal or designee will make a recommendation to the Superintendent for revocation of the student’s out-of-zone waiver. In most instances the revocation will be effective at the end of the semester after grades have been awarded. |
|
4. |
Mid-Year out-of-zone transfers to a new Program of Study are not allowed. |
5. |
In the event that a student opts to drop out of, or ceases to be enrolled in, a Program of Study for which an out-of-zone waiver has been approved, the student will be required to return to his/her home zone school at the start of the new semester once credit has been awarded. |
6. |
Students may apply for multiple programs of study; however, students may only accept one school’s invitation to join. |
7. |
A Program of Emphasis is a multi-year, specialized program that is available to students at the home zone school. Therefore, no out-of-zone waivers shall be granted for high school Major Areas of Interest. |
8. |
All completed applications must be submitted by the established due dates. |
9. |
Students who are denied entry to a program of study may appeal the decision to the Senior Director for Curriculum and Instructional Services by July 1, 2012. The Senior Director will convene the appeals committee to consider the appeal and issue a recommendation to the Superintendent. The decision of the Superintendent is final. |
10. |
Each school will determine the number of student seats available in each program of study and may deny entry solely based on seats available. A lottery system is available to ensure students have equal access to a program of study if seat capacity is met. Students may be placed on a waiting list and accepted as seats become available until the first day of school. |
11. |
Students may not apply for a program of study at an out-of-zone school if the program exists at the student's zoned high school. (programs that are replicated in the district: International Baccalaureate at Allen D. Nease and Pedro Menendez; VyStar Academy of Business and Finance at Bartram Trail and Pedro Menendez.) |
12. |
New students entering the St. Johns County School District: Any student entering 9th or 10th grade not previously enrolled in a St. Johns County public school within the prior school year is eligible to apply for any program of study in the St. Johns County School District up until the student’s first day of entry. ~Students entering the St. Johns County School District enrolled in the 11th or 12th grade who were previously enrolled in an equivalent program of study at his / her
