St. Johns County Academy of Future Teachers
Established in 2007-2008

Mission Statement:
To offer students a rigorous program of study which
promotes a diverse range of teacher training opportunities.

Academy Description
The four-year curriculum, rich with dual enrollment opportunities, embraces a core of exploratory teaching courses which allow students the advantage to begin student teaching while in high school. In addition, the program provides a seamless articulation with and transition to teacher preparation programs in Florida's University system. Through the academy concept, students are offered small learning communities, college-preparatory curriculum with a career theme, and partnerships with employers and/or mentors.

Students may earn their Associate of Arts degree from St. Johns River State College while earning their high school diploma which translates to a savings of over $6000.  Students may be able to enter a Bachelor’s Degree program with 60 college credits after high school graduation.  These college credits are at no cost!

St. Johns County is "growing their own"

Upon successful completion of the program, future teachers are awarded the opportunity to sign the Memorandum of Understanding thanks to the St. Johns County School Board. The MOU allows students who are hired by St. Johns County School District, after completing a four-year degree, to start at a higher level of the current pay scale than other beggining teachers.

Florida Future Educators of America

Academy students are also members of the Florida Future Educators of America St. Augusitne High School Chapter. Every year, students compete to attend the state-wide conference in Orlando, Florida. Consistently, our students bring home 1st place prizes in several categories and in 2014 received the Outstanding Chapter Award.

Teaching Academy Students Embrace Service-Learning

With hands on instructional experience, creative lesson planning, innovative technology, and cooperative community service, the St. Johns County Academy of Future Teachers is a highly successful academy. While working one-on-one with students at Crookshank Elementary and the Webster School, St. Augustine High School’s “Future Teachers” have the opportunity to serve as mentors for elementary school students.

Senior Future Teachers have the opportunity to get real world experience through bi-weekly internships. By graduation, they will have over 50 hours field experience.

This Academy provides a small and supportive environment for all students.  All of the students, especially the new freshman, are excited about the upcoming events and participation with various community organizations.
