Gamble Rogers Middle School (GRMS) Principal Randy Johnson
and Julington Creek Elementary School (JCES) Principal
Paul Goricki have been selected as the St. Johns County
School District’s nominees for the 2003 Commissioner’s
Principal Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership.
The program honors principals who have spearheaded initiatives
to increase student performance, promote safe learning
environments and establish partnerships with parents and
community members.
Mr. Johnson, the school district’s secondary principal nominee, is currently
in his fourth year as Principal of Rogers Middle School. One of his major accomplishments
has been raising the school recognition grade from a "C" to a "B" which
earned the school a 2002 Florida School Recognition Award. Other achievements
include Golden and Silver School Awards for volunteerism, Five Star School
Awards for community involvement, and the STAR Award from the Southern Association
of Colleges and Schools (SACS). GRMS offers the district’s Marine Science
program and also sponsors the annual Gamble Rogers Folk Festival each May.
Before coming to Rogers Middle School, Mr. Johnson served as Assistant Principal
at both St. Augustine High School and R. B. Hunt Elementary School. He also
worked as a curriculum writer and social studies teacher for 12 years. Mr.
Johnson earned his undergraduate degree from Tuskegee University and his master’s
degree from Nova University. His many community activities include Leadership
St. Johns, The St. Johns County Vision Team and the Core Planning Team for
the St. Johns County School District Strategic Plan.
“Mr. Johnson is an exemplary principal and instructional leader,” said
Assistant Superintendent Martha Mickler. “He fosters excellence by leading
by example, and he has a strong commitment to creating a climate conducive to
effective teaching and learning.”
The school district’s elementary principal nominee, Dr. Paul Goricki,
has been Principal of Julington Creek Elementary School for the past six years.
He previously served as principal of schools in Michigan, Maryland, New Hampshire
and Delaware. Dr. Goricki received his bachelor’s and master’s
degrees from Western Michigan University and his doctorate from Nova Southeastern
University.
This past year JCES attained an “A” ranking after two years of
being rated a “C” school. In recognition of this achievement, JCES
received the 2002 Florida Recognition Award and the STAR School Award from
SACS. Other awards presented to the school include the Five Star School Award
for volunteerism and the Golden School Award for community involvement.
JCES is located in one of the fastest growing areas of the county and state.
Among the many innovative programs it offers are “Leap into Summer Reading
Challenge,” a self-motivated activity to encourage student reading, and
the Instructional Delivery Model (IDM) Program which utilizes interactive technology
for effective teaching and learning in the classroom.
“Dr. Goricki is a man of integrity, a man who demonstrates servant leadership,
a gentle man who deeply cares about others,” said Nancy Winter, Assistant
Principal. “He is a lifelong learner and a visionary leader who promotes
systemic professional development initiatives that contribute to student performance
and/or to professional growth. He firmly believes that students learn as their
teachers grow.”
Three winners from each of the five state regions will be selected for the
Commissioner’s Principal Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership.
Award recipients will be notified in May and invited to attend the Florida
Association of School Administrators Annual Conference and Exposition scheduled
June 25-27 in Orlando. The winners will be honored at an awards luncheon held
in conjunction with the conference.
